Taiwan
One island, seven working regions.
Taiwan is 394 kilometres long and behaves like several markets stacked on top of one another. Semiconductors in the north, machine tools in the centre, advanced packaging and heavy industry in the south. What draws companies to each, what tends to surprise them, and where we think the work should start.

Taipei & New Taipei · Decisions, buyers and regulators
Where the decision gets made, and where the paperwork lives.
Taiwan’s e-commerce penetration reached 14.2% of retail in June 2026
Head offices, brand owners, importers and the consumer market that pays for imported goods. It is also where the regulators sit: the MOEA Department of Investment Review on Roosevelt Road, the TFDA, the BSMI and TIPO. Nangang’s exhibition halls host the trade shows your category is judged at.
Nearly every negotiation you care about ends in Taipei even when the factory is three hours south. Companies that treat it as a sales territory rather than a decision centre end up flying back for meetings they could have held once.

Hsinchu · Semiconductor and IC design
The reason the rest of the world takes meetings here.
Hsinchu Science Park spans six sites and 1,470 hectares
Fabs, IC design houses and the equipment, materials and EDA suppliers that orbit them. If you sell capital equipment, specialty chemicals, metrology, test or design software, your buyers are inside a thirty-minute radius of one another.
Qualification here is technical and unhurried, and it is done by engineers. A commercial pitch without a credible specification conversation behind it does not get a second meeting. Companies inside the park register with the Science Park Bureau, not the city government.
A specification-led conversation with two or three target accounts before any commercial ask.

Taoyuan · Manufacturing, air cargo and the free trade zone
The island’s front door, and a manufacturing base in its own right.
Taoyuan International Airport handled 2.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, up 10%
Contract manufacturers, electronics assembly and component makers, sitting beside Taiwan’s main international airport and its free trade zone. For high-value, time-sensitive goods the logistics case often decides the location before the commercial case does.
The Free Trade Zone lets goods be stored, reworked and re-exported without clearing customs into Taiwan proper — useful if Taiwan is a staging point rather than the final market. It is routinely overlooked by companies who assume they must import formally on day one.
Map the physical route your goods take before choosing who sells them.

Taichung · Machine tools and precision machinery
The world’s densest machine-tool cluster, inside a sixty-kilometre circle.
Around 90% of Taiwan’s machine-tool and component vendors sit within 60 km of Taichung
Machine tools, ball screws, linear guides, spindles, controllers and the subcontract network that feeds them — plus the Central Taiwan Science Park, whose 2025 revenue was NT$1.13 trillion across 61,901 employees. Taiwan is the world’s second-largest supplier of ball screws.
This is a relationship economy operating at component level. Firms here subcontract to one another constantly, which means your prospective customer and your prospective competitor often share a supplier — and will compare notes on you. TIMTOS, in Taipei each odd year, is where the cluster shows itself; the next runs 2–6 March 2027.
Work the component chain upward, not the brand list downward.

Changhua & Yunlin · Food processing and offshore wind
Where Taiwan grows, processes and — lately — generates.
The Central Taiwan Science Park’s Erlin site grew sales by more than 200% in 2025
Agriculture, aquaculture and the food-processing industry that turns them into product, alongside the service and supply base for Taiwan’s offshore wind build-out in the Taiwan Strait. Two very different industries, both with foreign supply chains behind them.
Food processors here buy ingredients, equipment and packaging rather than finished consumer goods — a different sale, with a different decision-maker, from the retail channel in Taipei. Cold-chain capability is the question that separates real importers from hopeful ones.
Decide whether you are selling to the processor or through them to the shelf.

Tainan · Advanced nodes and packaging
Advanced manufacturing at the scale the AI build-out needs.
Tainan Science Park covers 1,128 hectares, the largest single science-park site in Taiwan
Leading-edge fabrication, advanced packaging and testing, display and optoelectronics, and the construction, equipment and facilities supply chain expanding alongside them.
The south runs on a longer qualification clock and a stronger local-language expectation than Taipei. English-only documentation that passes in a Taipei head office will stall here.
Commit to Traditional Chinese documentation before the first technical meeting.
Advanced packaging and test, facilities and cleanroom supply, optoelectronics, industrial services

Kaohsiung · Port, heavy industry and energy
Taiwan’s deep-water gateway and its heavy-industrial base.
The Port of Kaohsiung moved 8.89 million TEU in 2025
Container and bulk shipping, petrochemicals, metals, shipbuilding and marine engineering, plus the Kaohsiung Science Park extending the semiconductor corridor southward.
If your product moves by sea in volume, your landed cost and lead time are decided here regardless of where you sell. Southern business culture is warmer and slower, and relationships carry further than contracts do.
Price the logistics before you price the product.
